A BILL to amend the Code of West Virginia, 1931, as amended, by
adding thereto a new section, designated §18-8-1b, relating to
the denial of course credits for unexcused absences in school.
Be it enacted by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Code of West Virginia, 1931, as amended, be amended
by adding thereto a new section, designated §18-8-1b, to read as
follows:
ARTICLE 8. COMPULSORY SCHOOL ATTENDANCE.
§18-8-1b. Denial of course credit due to unexcused absences.
(a) In schools using the block scheduling system, any student
who is absent for nine days or more of school in a semester and
whose absences are unexcused will not receive credit for the
semester in the course or courses that were missed.
(b) In all middle schools, junior high schools and high
schools that do not use the block scheduling system, if a student is absent for eighteen days or more in a year and the absences are
unexcused, the student may not receive credit for that year in the
course or courses that were missed.
NOTE: The purpose of this bill is to deny course credit for a
designated number of unexcused absences in a semester or year.
